Redbridge councillor suspended by Labour party

A Redbridge Labour councillor has been suspended from his party “pending an investigation”.

The suspension of councillor Kabir Mahmud was announced by Redbridge’s chief executive at the start of a full council meeting on Thursday.

After the meeting, Labour leader Jas Athwal confirmed that Cllr Mahmud was suspended on November 14, but said it would be “inappropriate to comment further” on the reasons why.

A council spokesperson said the investigation will be carried out by the Labour Party.

Following his party membership suspension, known as ‘removing the whip’, the newly-elected Clayhall councillor is now an independent.

Cllr Mahmud attended the full council meeting on Thursday, but did not contribute to any debates during the four-hour session.

When approached for comment, Cllr Mahmud said he was unable to discuss his suspension.
