Southend United v Cambridge United – Sky Bet League Two – Roots Hall Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview
It took seventeen attempts across all competitions, but Mark Molesley and Southend United finally tasted victory courtesy of Emile Acquah’s late winner at Walsall last weekend.
Victories elsewhere for Scunthorpe United and Mansfield Town somewhat tempered celebrations as Southend remained at the foot of the Sky Bet League Two table, but with a stepping stone in place and those above still in sight, Molesley will be keen to emphasis on his troops that an opportunity to salvage what has been the most difficult campaign in the clubs 114-year history still exists.
“That’s the word, relief,” Molesley told www.southendunited.co.uk.
“I always knew the win was coming and we always had belief in ourselves. We hadn’t quite had the rub of the green this season with injuries and decisions, but the resolve the boys shown there.
“They’ve dug deep and shown all the ingredients you need for a tough away trip.”
Blues now face a daunting test against free-scoring Cambridge United, followed by a visit from another promotion contender, Forest Green Rovers.
“We’ve got two of the top teams coming in the next two games, so we haven’t done anything,” Molesley added.
“All we’ve done is shown we’ve got the minerals, we’ve got the characteristics and we’ve got the fight in us. The job never changes – prepare, work as hard as we can, try and be better.”
Jeevesie’s prediction: Southend United 0-3 Cambridge United
