Rochford District Council holds Holocaust Memorial Day event

A Holocaust Memorial Day service, hosted by Rochford District Council’s Chairman Cllr Mr Robin Dray and featuring guest speaker Holocaust survivor Mr Leslie Kleinman, was held at the Mill Arts & Events Centre today, Friday, January 24.

This event,held on the site of Rochford District Council’s specially commissioned Memorial to Victims of Persecution,marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, and also pays tribute to the victims of other genocides that have occurred around the globe.

This year is of particular note, as it is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and the 25th anniversary of the Bosnian genocide.

The service, hosted by the Chairman’s Chaplain, Rev David Oxtoby, featured a moving talk from Holocaust survivor, Mr Leslie Kleinman, and a presentation fromFitzwimarc sixth form students.

The chairman of Rochford District Council, Councillor Mr Robin Dray, said: “The council is honoured to commemorate this day,the service was an opportunity for us all to come together to reflect and remember those who have experienced terrible atrocities.

“I hope this event will be a poignant moment of remembrance and serve as a reminder for future generations.We can all learn from history and pay our respect to the millions who died during the Holocaust and more recent genocides.”
