A man who was caught sexually assaulting a stranger in Westcliff has been jailed for two years and seven months.
Sergeant Rob Chapman was patrolling in his car in the Milton Road area at around 1.30am on August 5 when he heard what he described as “horrific screams”.
Slowing down to try and find where the screams had come from he saw two people on the floor in the distance.
When he approached them he found 45 year-old Ivan Laksar on top of a woman, pinning her down.
The woman told Sergeant Chapman Laksar had assaulted her and he was arrested.
The woman later told officers she had been walking home when she was grabbed by Laksar, sexually assaulted, and forced to the floor.
Shortly after Sergeant Chapman arrived at the scene a member of the public, who lived nearby and had heard the scream, came to assist.
Laksar, of Ashingdon Road, Rochford, was initially charged with attempted rape but pleaded guilty to sexual assault.
At Basildon Crown Court on Thursday December 19, he was jailed for two years and seven months and put on the Sex Offender’s Register for 10 years.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Tristin Wyatt said: “Ivan Laksar targeted a stranger as she walked home and attacked her, subjecting her to a terrifying ordeal.
“His actions were dangerous and predatory and it was fortunate Sergeant Chapman was in the area at the time.
“Laksar has at least admitted his crimes, preventing his victim from having to re-live the ordeal.
“I want to praise her courage and I hope this sentencing helps her move forward.
“I also want to praise and thank the member of the public for his actions in coming to help the woman having heard her in distress.”
