Rovers boss Butterworth thrilled with Blues workout

Great Wakering Rovers v Southend United – Friendly Match – Burroughs Park – Reaction

Great Wakering Rovers 0-2 Southend United

Great Wakering Rovers manager, Steve Butterworth reflected upon a successful evening for the club despite witnessing them slip to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Vanarama National League Southend United.

With lockdown rules lifted and people keenly turning to the terraces, a record crowd of 1,500 crammed into Burroughs Park to catch the action.

And although it was Blues who triumphed thanks to a Jason Demetriou penalty complimented by a close-range header from Hamzad Kargbo, Butterworth believed the Rovers had put on a good show for the huge audience.

“It was a great evening. A fantastic crowd. It was so good to see everyone out and enjoying themselves,” the Rovers chief told Yellow Sport.

“In terms of a football match, it was a perfect scenario for us. We had to work extremely hard without seeing much of the ball.

“We now face Athletic Newham at Burroughs Park on Saturday. Hopefully, we can take that performance into the match with us.”
