Rovers fightback to make cup progress

Felixstowe & Walton United v Great Wakering Rovers – Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round – The Goldstar Ground – Report

Felixstowe & Walton United 1-3 Great Wakering Rovers

Inspired by a quickfire double from Martin Tuohy, Great Wakering Rovers produced a rousing second-half comeback to see off Felixstowe & Walton United and make Emirates FA Cup progress at the Goldstar Ground.

Without a point in the Pitching In Isthmian League, North, Rovers boss Steve Butterworth had challenged his side to rise to the occasion and meet the standards set ahead of the First Qualifying Round tie.

However, the villagers were soon behind. Billy Holland handing the home side a tenth minute lead in front of an impressive crowd numbering 434.

But Great Wakering were to storm back after the interval, with Tuohy netting twice in the space of six minutes as the contest was turned on its head around the hour mark.

Substitute Adam Vyse confirmed the Rovers place in the next round with a third in the 76th minute as well as securing £2,250 in prize money for the Burroughs Park outfit.

Speaking to Yellow Sport after the game, Rover boss Butterworth enthused: “I’m buzzing for the boys.

“We showed real character in teh second half after a tough opening twenty minutes.

“They put us under pressure to start with, but once we got going we were very good and could have won more convincing.”
