Basildon United v Great Wakering Rovers – Pitching In Isthmian League North – Gardiners Close – Report
Basildon United 0-3 Great Wakering Rovers
Great Wakering Rovers clinched a vital Pitching In Isthmian League North victory over fellow strugglers, Basildon United at a chilly Gardiners Close.
A crowd of 120 faced the freezing conditions as the relegation-threatened duo went head-to-head – Rovers’ exacting ample revenge for the 4-1 hammering inflicted upon them by the Bees at Burroughs Park earlier in the campaign.
Rovers snatched the lead midway through the opening period when Martin Tuohy teed up Darnell Mavanga-Kithambo to drill beyond Basildon stopper, Emmanuel Olajide.
And the Rovers doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage-time. Basildon’s Ahmed Mohammed saw his thumping volley cannon back off the woodwork, allowing Rovers to break clear through Mavanga-Kithambo and Martin Tuohy – the latter sending Alex Clark clear to score via the foot of an upright.
Basildon was unable to redress the situation after the restart and was eventually undone again five minutes from time when substitute, Louie Hay seized on some hesitant defending to put the contest out of sight.
The victory – Their first in three games – moved Great Wakering up to fourteenth place in the table. Basildon United are now two placed further back, three points above the dropzone.
