Saxons are beaten on their return to action

Brentwood 22-12 Southend Saxons

Southend Saxons tasted defeat on their return to London One North action as hosts, Brentwood won a hard-fought encounter at King George’s Playing Fields.

Without a game in the best part of a month, the Saxons were understandably a little rusty. Conditions hampered both sides with persistent rain making the pitch extremely heavy underfoot.

Callum Smith’s converted first-half try ensured the visitors a half-time lead. But the home side made more of the elements after the restart and despite Jack MacVeigh crossing the line, Brentwood went on to pull clear.

The result saw Brentwood leapfrog Southend in the table. the Seasiders now sitting in seventh place.

Meanwhile, a sizable crowd congregated at Warners Bridge on Friday evening to see a strong Westcliff second-string see off Southend Priors 49-17.
