Old Priorian 20-39 Southend Saxons
SOUTHEND SAXONS first London One North outing of 2020 resulted in a sizable victory at Old Priorian, and with the Warners Bridge outfits Priors VI also winning on the road, Director of Rugby, Josh Ward was able to reflect upon a profitable day for the club.
Joel Armitage, Fraser Banks, Tom Day and new dad, Nik Grier all crossed the whitewash as the second-placed Saxons recorded a 39-20 success at St Benedict’s Playing Field. Meanwhile, their second string triumphed 22-5 at Brentwood.
“I’m delighted to come away from home and leave with the maximum, but we’re left with a fair bit of reflecting to do,” Ward explained.
“We started really well with tempo and good field position which gave us opportunities to get the scoreboard ticking.
“After that, we became a bit sloppy. Our unforced error count today was through the roof and something that we will need to look at this week.”
Ward continued: “These games are coming thick and fast now, it’s very tight but we’ve done our job today and we will enjoy celebrating it.
“Our quality in depth is growing, the Priors continuing to deliver at Brentwood today, which is hugely pleasing, we don’t have firsts and seconds players here, we are one squad and that is showing.
“We had forty-two lads training this week, it’s a special place to be right now.
“The reality is we’re chasing a high level of performance every week. Some aspects were pleasing, some need work. It’s not always going to be smooth running on heavy pitches, but we’re winning and that’s the most important thing right now”.
