Southend Saxons v Amersham & Chiltern = London One North – Warners Bridge – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

In-form Southend Saxons will be looking to back up last weekend’s Essex Cup semi-final success over Thurrock with further league progress when Amersham & Chiltern are the visitors to Warners Bridge for an eagerly anticipated London One North clash.

Director of Rugby, Josh Ward expressed his delight in booking a final berth: “A great feeling, naturally,” he told Yellow Sport.

“It’s a shame the competition hasn’t been fully backed and supported by a lot of senior Essex clubs but a chance of silverware that we intend to claim when we take on either Chingford or Brentwood in the final.”

Before the semi-final, Thurrock had been the proverbial thorn in the Saxons’ side in recent times: “Yes, they dig in and have made things difficult,” Ward added.

“They started hard and fast which again for us was disappointing, but from there the boys were ruthless. A really good team performance on the road.”

And now the Saxons’ boss wants to build on their semi-final success with a lucky thirteenth league victory of what so far has been a satisfactory campaign: “It’s been a good fortnight.

“It’s nice to be getting back home in front of a good crowd who play a big role for us.

“We have clarity on what’s required from here on in now, it’s cup final rugby each and every week. We’ve seen what we can do when we’re bang on it and we’ve also seen what can happen when we’re not.

“It’s a tough league and Amersham will be a handful, they never lay down, we’re going to have to put a really accurate performance together.
