SOUTHEND SAXONS have begun strengthening ahead of the 2020/21 London One North campaign with the signing of experienced second row, Dan Peasnell, from Hertford.
The 28-year-old, who has also featured for Eton Manor and Barking, enjoyed a stellar season with the Hoe Lane outfit and Saxons Director of Rugby, Josh Ward, was delighted with his latest acquisition.
“Dan’s a wonderful addition for us,” he told Yellow Sport.
“His hard-hitting style of play and work rate around the park will give us some real velocity to what we do up front. With anyone that comes and joins our group, it’s not just the rugby ability we want, it’s the quality of person. And after speaking a lot with Dan I think it’s a perfect fit.
“He’s gained some valuable experience in the league above with Hertford which will be a great asset going forward. Dan’s performances last season naturally stirred some interest around. The fact he’s chosen us – I’m delighted and looking forward to working with him.”
Meanwhile, speaking about his arrival, Peasnell enthused: “Having spoken in depth with Josh about their project and vision going forwards, it was clear my ambition and Southend’s were a match.
I’ve played there a few times during my time at Barking and always enjoyed the club atmosphere, they have a good crowd down there. I’m excited to get started and meet the boys.”
Inconsistencies during the last campaign drew Ward’s attention to finer detail: “It’s been clear this year that for us to be competing at the level we want to be, the overall squad strength in depth needs improving,” he added.
“We need to add some experience to a particularly young squad, and we also need to add some more ‘grunt’ to our roster. After going through our normal recruiting and scouting process, we identified a few key targets that we are working on at present.”
