School in Billericay awarded prestigious flagship status for inclusion

A Billericay school has been upgraded to a national Flagship School for inclusion.

South Green Junior School, in Hickstars Lane, Billericay, is one of only 100 schools in the UK to achieve the flagship status.

South Green Juniors was evaluated in April against a nationally-recognised framework called the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM). To obtain flagship status, a school has to be successfully assessed as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for three years previously.

External assessor Roger Leeke gave the school, its staff and pupils glowing feedback.

He praised the school’s leadership, but also singled out the pupils’ response to the recent lockdown and home learning, saying: “All the children spoke in a positive way about the school. They felt there was a fun factor in their learning and that they were prepared emotionally for their next steps. One Y6 child said that ‘the school deals well with mental health issues.

“Children were articulate, able to look at the situation rationally and give an excellent presentation of themselves and the school.”

Mr Leeke’s assessment said: ‘There seems to be nothing that is too much effort or trouble to ensure families have the best possible outcomes. Parents understand the inclusion agenda and are fully behind the school’s ethos.

“The leadership team continues to be innovative in the way in which it approaches the curriculum for every child and especially for those in greatest need. All staff demonstrate a commitment which goes way beyond that which is expected in most schools.’

Headteacher, Liz Benjeddi said: “I am thrilled at the way in which our school has been recognised in this award scheme. “Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at South Green Juniors because we really do believe that every child matters.”

“Being a Flagship School is a great honour for us because it means we share best practice with others. This award truly reflects the wonderful work of our staff, governing body and, of course, our fantastic pupils.”
