Hampshire trail Essex by 170 runs with four first-innings wickets standing

Shane Snater and Simon Harmer salvaged a tricky situation on day one of Essex’s LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Hampshire at the Cloud County Ground.

On a day that saw sixteen wickets tumble, Snater scored 71 off 73 balls, helping the home side recover after floundering on 105 for seven.

Skipper, Tom Westley hit 46 during a 111-minute stint in the middle, but with Kyle Abbott (3/41) and Liam Dawson (3/71) leading the way with the ball, Hants appeared to have the upper hand until Snater intervened.

Essex reached 234 and having been largely let off the hook, Harmer pressed home what could prove to be a vital advantage.

The South African took 4/23 from eight overs, while Sam Cook claimed a further two wickets for 12 to turn the tide Essex’s way. Play resumes on Monday at 11am.
