Dutch international, Shane Snater carried the fight with the bat as battling Essex responded positively on day three of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Northamptonshire at the Cloud County Ground.
Resuming on 95/8, Snater and Mark Steketee put together an impressive ninth-wicket stand of 69. And although the latter found himself back in the pavilion after emphatically losing his off-stump to Gareth Berg for 18, Snater provided the Chelmsford crowd with a crumb of comfort, finishing unbeaten on 79 – a knock that included ten boundaries and one 6s.
Essex was eventually forced to follow on after reaching 193. Ben Sanderson (4/32) and Matt Kelly (2/50) the pick of the Northamptonshire attack.
The hosts found themselves on 149/3 at the close, still trailing by 48 runs. Paul Walter and Matt Critchley followed Snater’s lead and dug deep after Essex had slumped to 58/3.
Walter is unbeaten on 40 and Critchley 44, as the hosts frustrated their guests. However, it will take an extraordinary effort on the final day to salvage a match which was largely taken away from them by Luke Procter’s exquisite 113 which helped Northamptonshire to a sizable first innings score of 390.
Play resumes on Sunday at 11am.
