Essex Eagles continued their preparations ahead of the 2022 season with a friendly double-header against old adversaries, Somerset at the Abu Dhabi Cricket Stadium.

Sam Cook skippered Essex during the opening match. The right-arm medium-fast bowler claimed four Somerset wickets for 17, while Ben Allison finished with 2/5 – Tom Abell hit 51 and Lewis Gregory 34 as Somerset posted 194/9 from their twenty overs.

And that proved sufficient as the young Essex side fell short. Aron Nijjar and Allison performed reasonably well with the bat, scoring 32 and 31 respectively. Allison’s knock coming off just eleven balls. Jack Brooks impressed with the ball for Somerset, helping his side home with figures of 5/13.

Somerset again recorded victory when the side resumed, this time coming out on top, this time by five wickets.

Paul Walter’s 31 was the highlight of the Essex innings as they reached a modest 138/8. Will Buttleman hit 25 – Gregory taking 2/19 for Somerset.

Somerset reached their target with seven balls to spare. Abell passed fifty again, while Banton chipped in with 41. Allison added a further two wickets to those claimed in the first match, claiming 2/9 from three overs.

The two sides will now play a 45-over fixture at the Abu Dhabi Cricket Stadium on Sunday, March 13.
