Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Ipswich Town
HEUNG-MIN Son scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur recorded a 3-0 victory over Sky Bet League One outfit, Ipswich Town, in a fairly low-key pre-season encounter in N17.
Against an Ipswich side with minutes already banked from a mid-week double-header with Colchester United, Jose Mourinho fielded a strong starting eleven, including recent signing, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – most notably, the Spurs chief going with a back three of Juan Foyth, Toby Alderweireld and Ben Davies, perhaps further indicating the application of his stamp ahead of the new campaign?
Spurs wasted little time in opening up the Suffolk side. Ryan Sessegnon cut between Kane Vincent-Young and Toto Nsiala before dispatching low beyond the wrong-footed David Cornell in the Town goal inside six minutes.
And swiftly following it was two. Cornell’s misplaced clearance was seized upon by Hojbjerg allowing Dele to tee up Son for an easy finish from close range.
Ipswich were neat and tidy in spells but offered little punch. Meanwhile, Foyth used pinpoint accuracy to play in Son – the South Korean then exquisitely lifting over Cornell for Tottenham’s third inside the opening half an hour.
Lucas and Dele passed up reasonable opportunities to extend the lead further, while Son was too high when it appeared easier to score. Cornell clung to Alderweireld’s goal-bound header as the Spurs continued to ask questions ahead of the interval.
A string of changes at the break offered a blank canvas. Joe Hart was handed his Spurs debut. However, it proved to be little more than a cameo for the experienced England stopper – he gave way to Paulo Gazzaniga midway through the second period without being troubled by the timid Town attack.
In truth, genuine opportunities were now at a premium. Freddie Sears fired over for Town, either side of half-chances for Lucas and Alfie Devine.
Spurs now take on Reading and Birmingham City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in back-to-back warm-up matches on Friday and Saturday, August 28/29 (3pm).
