The mixed divisions took centre stage in the Southend and District Badminton leagues this week with six of the seven fixtures being mixed matches.
In the mixed second division, Phoenix Flames Seconds made a near perfect start to their season with back-to-back victories. The first was a 9-0 win against Westcliff Thirds at home. Ben Bradford and Carly Horsler, Russell Dobson and Vikki Walker and Rob Dunn and Tracey Carey all picked up hat-tricks. Barbara Childs and John Hall came closest to getting a point for the visitors.
Phoenix then sealed an 8-1 triumph on the road as they beat Highlands. Russell Dobson and Vikki Walker and Ben Bradford and Kiv Walker-Gray, on her debut, both won three rubbers each without dropping a game and were supported by a double from Rob Dunn and Tracey Carey. Tim Rainbow and Hannah Crosby helped Highlands to their point.
Highlands did, however, fare much better in their other fixture this week as they won 7-2 away at Fitzwimarc Thirds. Tim Rainbow and Hannah Crosby and Tom Crosby and Heidi Paine both won three rubbers each with the latter not dropping a game. Lewis Pain and Marina Gare also picked up a win to leave them third in the table. Adam Dixon-Peters and Kay Bailey and Mike Vardy and Carole Reader secured a rubber each for the home side who drop to second behind Phoenix Flames Seconds.
SLH Rayleigh started their Mixed Premier campaign with consecutive defeats against the two Westcliff sides. The first was a 7-2 defeat against Westcliff Seconds. Emma Anderson-Brown and Rob Perry and Barbara Childs and Matt Tonge both picked up a perfect three rubbers while Matt Ayres and Christina Scott won the other point for the home side. Caroline Fletcher and Adam Whiting and Jan Watt and Peter Hall helped SLH to their two points.
It was a closer fought contest against Westcliff’s first team at home as they lost out 5-4. Matt Tonge and Nicola Waller won all three rubbers for the visitors and were backed up by a brace from Matt Ayres and Adrienne Munro to clinch victory. Ashleigh Smith and Peter Hall were victorious in two rubbers for SLH while Judy Slater and Joe Garnett and Jan Watt and Ian Moorcroft both won a rubber each.
Elsewhere in the Mixed Premier, Fitzwimarc Seconds went top with an 8-1 victory at home to Phoenix Flames. Harris Foster-Carter and Pam Lee and Zak Pryor and Dawn Terry each secured hat-tricks with Jay Crewe and Julie Ingham bagging a double as well. Andrew McMahon and Mandie Breed helped Phoenix to their point.
Finally, in the Men’s Second Division, Hawkwell Seconds started their season with a 6-3 win over Blenheim. Keith Wood and Ben Gates, Andrew Strutt and Richard Gardner and Alex Gilbert and Chris Gates all won two rubbers each for the Hawks. Andrew McMahon and Nish Tanna secured a hat-trick for the visitors.
