Southend stalemate

Bromley v Southend United – Vanarama National League – Hayes Lane – Report

Bromley 0-0 Southend United

In a game short on chances, Southend United and Bromley shared the spoils in a 0-0 stalemate at Hayes Lane. The match, coming just six days after the Ravens’ 1-0 win at Roots Hall on Boxing Day, was in truth a fairly uninspiring affair although the point-maintained Blues position in sixth spot and the play-off places – this despite them having not won in the league since beating Dorking Wanderers 2-0 on November 12 and having taken just two points in their past five games.

Kevin Maher made three changes to his starting line-up with Jason Demetriou, Harry Taylor and leading goal-scorer Callum Powell coming into the team in place of the suspended Shaun Hobson, whilst Wes Fonguck and Chris Wreh both dropped to the bench.

Southend had a chance to open the scoring just two minutes into the game, when former Bromley winger Jack Bridge raced down the left-hand side, only to slice his shot wide of the right-hand post.

Just shortly after, Harry Taylor went close when his shot flew inches wide of the upright whilst Bromley was unfortunate not to take the lead midway through the first half when Corey Whitley’s effort rebounded off the foot of the post.

On the stroke of half-time, Harry Cardwell was brought to ground by Louis Dennis, only for referee Elliott Swallow to ignore Blues appeals for the penalty and wave play on.

Whilst Southend were certainly the better side in the first half, Bromley came back strongly after the break and it took a top-class fingertip save from Blondy Nna Noukeu to deny Jude Arthurs – only for them to go close again just after when Harry Forster’s shot curled narrowly over the bar.

Substitute Chris Wreh and Cav Miley both had good chances to break the deadlock near the end, but it was an afternoon when neither side could find a way through and the game, which in truth will not linger too long in the memory, finished scoreless.

Blues are in action once again against Solihull Moors at Roots Hall Stadium next Saturday, January 7 at 3.00pm.
