The Southend libraries’ annual summer reading challenge is set to go ahead digitally this year as libraries across the town remain open for click and collect services.
Southend children are encouraged to participate in the challenge by reading books of their choice from the Summer Reading Challenge Website at sillysquad.org.uk. Here they can ‘unlock’ digital rewards and more fun and activities for every book read.
Cllr Kevin Robinson, cabinet member for business, culture and tourism, said: “The summer and winter reading challenges are a great way of encouraging children to pick up some books through the summer holidays”.
“Although this year we are living in unprecedented times, we recognised the importance this project has for young people’s wellbeing and development, so I’m delighted to see the event running again this year, albeit completely online”.
“Our new Click and Collect service will enable parents and children to pick out their own books, or even have some suggested by our expert librarians. I wish everyone involved all the best throughout the challenge, and hope the children continue to foster a lifelong love of reading.”
To register, simply visit sillysquad.org.uk and join the challenge. Parents will need to make an account first and then join up children.
Use your library card to download audio and e-books, comics and more using your library card on the BorrowBox and RB Digital Apps (available from your usual app store) – all for free.
Reserve books via the catalogue https://southend.spydus.co.uk or telephone your local library and use the new click-and-collect service. You’ll be given a time and date to collect your books.
The libraries team would love to see your reviews, comments and artwork, so please send them to [email protected]
Weekly competitions (with prizes) will be posted on the Southend Libraries social media Facebook. If you submit an entry, your name will be put into our prize draw for Adventure Island wristbands in September.
The challenge is now open and all children are encouraged to take part until Saturday 12 September.
