Spot-kick heartbreak for brave Beach Boys

(Stevenage won 5-4 on penalties)

Concord Rangers came agonisingly close to providing an Emirates FA Cup upset against Sky Bet League Two outfit, Stevenage, at the Lamex Stadium.

“Everyone involved can be very proud of their efforts.” boss Danny Scopes told Yellow Sport after the Beach Boys slipped out via a penalty shootout after the sides had shared four goals in what was a compelling cup tie.

A deflected effort from former Southend United man, Ben Coker, gave Stevenage the lead just before the half-hour mark. However, the Beach Boys responded instantly with Alex Wall picking up the pieces to level after Sam Blackman had helped on Jason Raad’s pass.

Danny Newton scrambled home in extra-time to reestablish Stevenage’s earlier lead, but once again, Scopes’ charges displayed their battling qualities – Odei Martin nodding in Lamar Reynolds’ centre to ensure penalties.

But it was the EFL side who held their nerve from the spot.
“We must use the disappointment to push on – bottle up all the good bits and use them to drive us on in the league,” Scopes added.
