Spot-on Rovers make Trophy progress

Stowmarket Town v Great Wakering Rovers – Buildbase FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round – Greens Meadow – Report

Stowmarket Town 1-1 Great Wakering Rovers

(Great Wakering Rovers won 4-3 on penalties)

Great Wakering Rovers held their nerve to win a dramatic penalty shootout and progress through a close and competitive Buildbase FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round tie at Greens Meadow.

Mitchell Gilbey handed the Rovers a surprise ninth-minute league and although Reggie Lambe levelled for the home side before the twenty-minute mark it was the villagers who went on to progress.

Jacob Wiggins netted the decisive spot-kick. Due to a sizable injury list, Rovers boss, Steve Butterworth was forced to name himself and physio Lewis Catling amongst the substitutes: “Our cup-form has struck again,” he told Yellow Sport.

“I made a lot of changes, including me and Lewis coming into the group because of the injuries.

“But spirit and determination has seen us through. We must take this into Tuesday’s league game with Grays and start climbing the table.”
