Spot-on Sungate end Old Boys cup dreams

Old Southendian 2-2 Sungate
(Sungate won 5-4 on penalties)

David Tubbs focused on the positives despite his Old Southendian side slipping out of the Essex Premier Cup on penalties following an otherwise entertaining tie with Sungate at Garon Park.

Nick Henesy nodded home an Ed Gould centre, but after passed up several opportunities to seal the tie, the Old Boys were pegged back when Sungate netted from the spot.

The visitors snatched the lead in extra-time, but the Seasiders forced a shootout when Mitch Alli’s trickery fashioned an opportunity for Craig Paton to level.

Alli and Sam Adcock both hit the woodwork in the closing minutes, but it was Sungate who held their nerve to progress from twelve yards.

“The biggest thing for me was the performance today,” Tubbs told Yellow Sport.

“Whilst it’s disappointing to lose on penalties nobody could deny we deserved nothing short of a win.

“There was belief, fight, passion, encouragement, great movement, great decision making and good execution all over the field. The subs came on and really influenced the game too.”
