Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur – Premier League – St James Park – Report

Newcastle United 4-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of a top-four finish took a sizable dent after they were thrashed by four unanswered goals by Newcastle United at St James Park.

Indeed, the severity of the setback saw the Lilywhites drop out of the Champions League places, with Aston Villa profiting from their capitulation in the North-East.

Alexander Isak netted in each half for the rampant home side, while Anthony Gordan and Fabian Schar rubbed salt in an already gaping wound.

Frustrated Spurs boss, Ange Postecoglou, bemoaned: “Newcastle were good, credit to them, I thought they were really good today.

“We just didn’t really get a grip of the game at all. Right from the start it felt like we allowed Newcastle to dictate the way the game was played, we never really wrestled control at any stage. We paid a price for that.

“I think that’s just kind of a symptom of the whole collective of it. I don’t think it was one person that was at fault today.

“It was about us as a collective. We never really got to grips with the game of football. We let it get away from us. And like I said, we paid a price for it.”

Tottenham Hotspur return to Premier League action on Sunday, April 28, when Arsenal are the visitors to N17 (2pm).
