Steely Daggers dig deep for a precious point

Dagenham & Redbridge 0-0 Notts County

Dagenham & Redbridge extended their recent unbeaten Vanarama National League sequence to three matches after digging deep to snub out an impressive Notts County side at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Elliot Justham fielded Elisha Sam’s early attempt, while Ruben Rodrigues fluffed his lines from close range as the visitors – off the back of two successive victories – started brightly.

Daggers were already on the back foot. Jake Reeves sent a rasping drive from twenty yards against Justham’s left-hand post, while Kyle Wootton nodded over. Then Justham used his feet to deny Sam and Rodrigues sent another attempt wide as the onslaught continued.

Justham saved from Reeves and Rodrigues was again off target. Meanwhile, Paul McCallum was caught in two minds when the Daggers finally created an opening of their own – his final ball neither here nor there as Notts were let off the hook.

Notts were screaming for a spot-kick immediately after the interval when Kenny Clark appeared to bowl over Wootton – referee, Tom Bishop, waving away the East Midlanders frantic appeals.

Wootton directed wide after Enzio Boldewijn had skipped the off-side and centred – but Dagenham had largely drawn the Notts sting, although chances of their own continued to come at a premium as the game became somewhat untidy.

Scott Wilson’s attempt was rebuffed following a rapid Daggers attack from deep. Meanwhile, Will Wright’s thundering free-kick cannoned back off the post as a smash ’n’ grab gathered momentum for the hosts. Then substitute Angelo Balanta twice went close as Notts – earlier so dominant – began to wobble.

Wootton perhaps should have done better when presented with a late chance for Notts, while Jim O’Brien’s low drive was deflected behind. But Dagenham will maintain their second half toil was worthy of a share of the spoils following a resolute defensive performance.

Dagenham & Redbridge return to Vanarama National League action on Saturday, December 5 when they take on Aldershot Town at the Recreation Ground (3pm).
