Strong second-half showing sees Old Boys overcome Town

Old Southendian 4-1 Basildon Town

OLD SOUTHENDIAN took a huge step towards securing their ProKit UK Essex Olympian League Premier Division status with a resounding 4-1 victory over Basildon Town at Garon Park.

The blustery conditions made it difficult for both sides. Nevertheless, playing a high pressing game, it was the home side who broke through after half an hour when Ed Gould lobbed neatly over Town stopper, Luke Morenas-Jones.

After the interval, Old Southendian took full control. Riley Oliver profited from Nick Henesety’s toil to double the advantage, then skipper, Luke Maloney, added a third from distance to all but kill the contest.

Matt Wilson nodded a fourth six minutes from time. However, Basildon Town, to their credit, refused to throw in the towel and reduced the arrears in the final minute – Barv Walkuaika with the consolation.

Speaking to Yellow Sport after the game, Old Boys boss, Connor Lane, enthused: “I’m incredibly proud of the lads today.

“Off the back of our defeat last week, we have worked really hard to put things right. Each player did what was asked and we managed to play some of the best football we have for a long time.

“Everyone was superb today but Lawrence Philips, Riley Oliver and Ed Gould were stand out players – they controlled the game for us.

“We are buzzing and already can’t wait for the next game.”
