Teenager dies in Basildon collision

A young man has died following a collision in Basildon.

Officers attempted to stop a white Citroen Berlingo van shortly after 2.30am today, Saturday November 13.

It failed to stop and a short time later the vehicle was in collision with a wall in Pound Lane, Bowers Gifford.

A 17-year-old man died at the scene.

Three further people were taken to hospital.

An 18-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

The road was closed throughout the morning but has now reopened.

Senior Investigating Officer, Inspector Mark Fraser said: “My officers have been working through the night to begin to establish the circumstances leading up to this collision in which a young man sadly lost his life.

“I need anyone who saw what happened or has any CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage to contact my team.”

A mandatory referral has been made to the IOPC.
