Colchester United 0-2 Newport County
Relegation-threatened Colchester United were brushed aside by Newport County and had Frank Nouble sent-off on what was a troubled afternoon for the Sky Bet League Two strugglers.
Confidence is a rare commodity in football and despite ending a wretched run of fourteen matches without a win, Colchester’s remained questionable.
Indeed, it was Newport who created the first big chance. U’s stopper, Shamal George clawing out Nicky Maynard’s close-range attempt after Ryan Haynes had fashioned the opening from a wide position.
Maynard again went close – toe poking agonisingly wide after Liam Shephard had centred, while Haynes had a shot blocked as the Welshmen asked all the early questions.
Indeed, it came as little surprise when Newport grabbed the lead. Former Dagenham & Redbridge man, Joss Labadie sweeping home after Josh Sheehan had picked him out. Meanwhile, either side of the break Hayes and Matt Dolan tested George from distance as the impressive visitors looked to kill the contest with the minimum of fuss.
Callum Harriott’s attempt was saved by Nick Townsend – It had taken the U’s an hour to provide a threat. But Colchester’s afternoon was to take another turn for the worse. Nouble was cautioned for successive fouls on Shepherd and Sheehan – Referee, Mr Coggins ending the frontman’s involvement early following the advice of the fourth official.
Newport swiftly took advantage. Padraig Amond prodded home from close range to seal the deal after Labadie’s free-kick had been flicked on. Colchester United remain in twentieth place. They return to Sky Bet League Two action on Tuesday, March 9 when they travel to Harrogate Town (7pm).
