The perfect dream still in the stars for Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City – Premier League – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Saturday 5:30pm – Preview

Tears were shed then eyebrows raised. The Pochettino era had run its course and the old romantics amongst the N17 faithful found themselves vigorously quizzing which direction Tottenham Hotspur was heading in?

Yes, I think it’s fair to say, there was a large percentage of Spurs fans concerned when Jose Mourinho walked through the doors to replace a man who had earned a special place in their hearts. However, exactly one year on, Tottenham’s evolution has been notable – they have learned different ways to win, discovered a ‘plan B’ and above all, appear to be genuine contenders at the Premier League summit.

Of course, the proof will ultimately be in the pudding – a long-awaited trophy success – although speaking ahead of a proverbial ‘acid test’ against Manchester City, Mourinho suggested the perfect copybook might be out of reach despite success appearing a step closer.

“I think clubs never reach what they want,” the Spurs boss confessed.

“Us coaches, we are always in search of the impossible, we are always in the search for perfection and in my case, we are far from perfection.

“For example, our opponents tomorrow they are winning the Premier League or almost winning the Premier League or fighting for the Premier League for more than ten years, and probably they didn’t reach perfection, and want more.”

Spurs go into the game unbeaten in seven Premier League outings. However, Mourinho insisted the outcome on Saturday evening will not paint a clearer picture with so much football still to be played.

“The result of the game will not change anything – only three points more or three points less,” he added.

“Being first, second, third or fourth fifth or sixth in the table. But in terms of a journey, our ambition, our project, our process, it’s not going to change.”

Mourinho will be without Erik Lamela but otherwise has a full squad to select from.
