Third time lucky for super Saxons

Southend Saxons 45-14 Brentwood

Southend Saxons recorded their first London One North victory of the season at the third attempt as Brentwood were beaten in an entertaining encounter at Warners Bridge.

Defeats to Colchester and Thurrock, coupled with a sizable list of absentees had hindered the Saxons’ build-up to their latest Essex derby. However, on a glorious September afternoon, it was the home crowd who went away happy after a deluge of tries.

Rory Inwood went over twice, while Jac Sexton, Tom Ramsey and Chris Vaughan repeated the dose – Jack MacVeigh compounding the visitors’ agony with the boot as the Saxons recorded a 45-14 success.

The home side led by twenty-four unanswered points at the halfway point and despite a Brentwood rally after the restart, it was the rejuvenated Saxons who prevailed with some to spare.

Vaughan, Ramsey and Sexton produced notable performances for the home side. The latter for his decision-making and kicking from fly-half.

The Saxons threw on Andrew McClintock and Simon Hoult during the final stages – the pair now having racked up more than 500 appearances for the Seasiders.
