Essex Eagles’ miserable start to their T20 Vitality Blast campaign continued as Sussex Sharks inflicted a seven-wicket defeat on a disappointing evening at The Cloudfm County Ground.

This was Essex’s third successive defeat in the competition. Having been invited to bat, the home side struggled to find any momentum with the bat. Michael Pepper’s 38 off 25 balls included four 4s and a six. Will Buttleman continued to show promise with 25 from 17 – George Garton the pick of the Sharks attack, taking 3/31, while Tymal Mills took two as Essex were restricted to 128/8.

Sussex made short work of the chase, knocking off the runs with six overs to spare. Skipper Luke Wright led the way with 75 off 44 balls – his innings including eight boundaries and three 6s. Meanwhile, Travis Head contributed 27 – Aron Nijjar the only Essex bowler to taste success, taking 2/26 from three overs.

The defeat leaves Essex next to bottom in the South Group. They return to T20 Vitaliy Blast action on Friday, June 18 when Gloucestershire visit the Cloudfm County Ground (7pm).
