Tom Westley joined Alastair Cook as a first-innings centurion as the Essex batsmen piled on the runs on day two of their LV Insurance County Championship encounter at New Road.

Resuming their overnight tally of 266/2, skipper Westley reached 113 off 256 balls, complimenting Cook’s 115 from teh opening day.

Dan Lawrence fell ten short of joining the pair on three figures. The Leytonstone-born right-handers 90 compiled during 213 minutes in the middle.

Paul Walter chipped in with 65, while Simon Harmer was unbeaten on 57 from 51 balls when the declaration came. Brett D’Oliveira with 3/147 and Alzarri Joseph – 2/92 – standing out during a difficult couple of days for the Worcestershire attack.

The hosts opening pairing of Daryl Mitchell and Jake Libby navigated the remaining sixteen overs of the day on 17* and 15* respectively as Worcestershire closed on 30 without loss. Play resumes on Saturday at 11am.
