Southend United v Altrincham – Vanarama National League – Roots Hall Stadium – Report

Southend United 2-1 Altrincham

Southend United came from behind to see off Altrincham and earn their third successive Vanarama National League victory on the bounce, edging them five points clear of the relegation places.

While Southend have picked up of late, Altrincham arrived in south-east Essex off the back of three straight defeats. Nevertheless, Blues boss, Kevin Maher, was expecting a tough encounter for his charges: “They’ve got a good enough team that that could change at any time, and I’m sure they’ll be coming here trying to get something and put an end to that,” he explained.

Indeed, Altrincham found themselves in front after just five minutes when

Chris Conn-Clarke bagged his seventeenth goal of the campaign.

However, Maher’s men hit back with two quick goals before the interval. Harry Cardwell profited from Marcus Dackers’ toil to restore parity before Wes Fonguck turned the game on its head.

The victory moved Southend up to thirteenth place. They return to Vanarama National League action on Saturday, March 2 when they face Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park (3pm).
