Tilley’s late strike sinks U’s

Crawley Town 1-0 Colchester United

Colchester United’s horrendous Sky Bet League Two run continued as Crawley Town substitute, James Tilley bagged a stoppage-time winner at the People’s Pension Stadium.

While Crawley ended a nine-match wait for a league victory, Colchester’s woes now stretch back twelve games, leaving Steve Ball’s men looking nervously over their shoulder at those in the dropzone.

Tilley profited from a Tom Nichols pass to decide an otherwise uneventful contest. Aramide Oteh and Omar Sowunmi were denied by Crawley’s veteran stopper, Glenn Morris. Meanwhile, U’s keeper, Dean Gerken was relieved to see Jack Powell’s strike fizz the wrong side of an upright.

But Colchester were hit by a sucker punch at the death, heaping further pressure on boss Ball.

The U’s return to Sky Bet League Two action on Tuesday, February 23 when Exeter City visit the JobServe Community Stadium (7pm).
