Cheltenham Town 1-0 Southend United
Southend United remain outside the Sky Bet League Two relegation zone despite slipping to defeat at promotion-chasing Cheltenham Town.
Blues withstood heavy pressure from the home side – particularly during the opening half while offering very little threat of their own. Indeed, Southend couldn’t muster a shot on target during the contest. Mark Mosley’s men remaining the lowest scoring side in the division with just 21 goals to their name during the campaign to date.
The only goal came seven minutes after the restart. Blues defender, Shaun Hobson felled Callum Wright – Conor Thomas sent emergency stopper, James Montgomery the wrong way from the resulting spot-kick.
Defeat for Grimsby Town and Barrow ensured that it was a case of ‘as you were’ at the foot of the table.
After the restart though, Cheltenham broke the deadlock as they won a penalty for a foul on Wright by Shaun Hobson. It looked like the Leicester loanee was looking for the contact, but referee Will Finnie pointed to the spot, with Conor Thomas sending Montgomery the wrong way to score.
Southend United return to Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday, March 6 when they face Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park (3pm).
