Tottenham’s mindset suggests they have grown in statue

Chelsea 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur – Reaction

Top of the table – unbeaten in nine Premier League outings – a point and a clean sheet away against a notorious nightmare of a neighbour. Nevertheless, with their new-found mindset, it was a frustrated Spurs side which departed Stamford Bridge.

In truth, Spurs didn’t really do enough to earn all three points in West London. However, Jose Mourinho shared the disappointment of his players following this instantly forgettable stalemate.

“I share with my players this mentality that we have – we are totally on the same side,” Mourinho explained.

“We came here to win and we didn’t. We didn’t because the opponent was defensively very good, they didn’t take risks.
“They were solid and they didn’t project many players in attack like they normally do and also because we need to do a little bit better.”

Mourinho added: “We built well from the keeper, we were very comfortable on that.

“We arrived at the midfield line many, many times with the ball controlled and with our midfield players with the ball at the feet, then we didn’t transform that on occasions. That was basically our problem.”

With his own side displaying resolve, the Spurs chief wasn’t overly surprised to see Chelsea offer much the same, leading to an unusually dour contest between the pair: “I think it’s normal – I think football is prepared,” Mourinho said.

“Nowadays, I have and I imagine others also have, coaching staff and good analysts. We go deep on opponents. We know opponents’ qualities, we know opponents’ dynamics.

“This is the kind of game where I told my players that this was an opportunity to go five points ahead of Chelsea and I’m pretty sure that they didn’t want that.

“In the end, it was a game that I believe both teams wanted to win but at the same time, both teams don’t want to lose.”
