Brantham Athletic 1-2 Basildon Town

Basildon Town carried their superb Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League One South form into the FA Vase as they pulled off a remarkable 2-1 victory over higher ranked Brantham Athletic.

It wasn’t plain sailing for Town. Brantham started positively and took the lead within five minutes when Jamie Moore profited from a troublesome flag kick.

Town had to weather the home side’s storm. But after half an hour, they struck back in bizarre fashion when the Brantham goalkeeper punched a Joe Burgess free-kick into his own net.

Buoyed by their slice of fortune, Town grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck after the restart and when the hosts failed to clear their lines following a long throw, Graham Harrison fired the visitors ahead.

Town survived a late Brantham rally to prevail. Speaking to Yellow Sport after the game, player/boss, Marcus Bowers, enthused: “I’m extremely proud of what we achieved as a Club.

“An excellent day and one I’ll never forget.”

Basildon Town now turn their attention to the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League One South where they face Benfleet at Rookery Hill on Wednesday, August 31 (7:45pm).
