Tributes paid to Rochford councillor

Family and friends have paid tribute to Rochford District councillor Craig Cannell after he passed away suddenly on the November 14, aged 32.

Born in Beverly, raised in Boston, and educated in Sheffield, Cllr Cannell moved to Essex in 2014 to start his career. He was drawn to Rayleigh due to its historic buildings, green spaces, and community feel; traits he enjoyed when living in Lincolnshire.

He was elected to Rochford District Council as a Liberal Democrat in 2018, representing residents of Downhall & Rawreth.  In May 2021 the community also elected him as their Rayleigh County & Town Councillor.

Jonathan Stephenson, chief executive of Rochford District Council, cancelled all council meetings as a mark of respect and to give time to grieve and to reflect.

He said: “All our thoughts and prayers are with Craig’s family at this very difficult time.“

To respect the wishes of Cllr Cannell’s family, the council will postpone its tribute to him until its meeting on December 7.
