Blues in last chance saloon

Troubled Vanarama National League outfit Southend United has been granted a final 42-day adjournment of their winding-up petition by the High Court to complete the sale of the ailing club.

Blues Chairman Ron Martin has until October 4 to complete the sale or the 118-year-old club will be wound up.

Mr Martin told the court that a sale should be finalised by the end of next month with an unnamed Australian buyer believed to be in the process of completing a deal.

But with HMRC still owed significantly, Blues are likely to remain under a transfer embargo and face a ten-point deduction from the National League for breaching their financial rules

Judge Prentis warned: “If this was not a football club, with the attachment of its fans, I would be winding it up today.”
