Unlucky Rovers hit late at Sudbury

AFC Sudbury v Great Wakering Rovers – Pitching In Isthmian League North – MEL Group Stadium – Report

AFC Sudbury 4-2 Great Wakering Rovers

Battling Great Wakering Rovers slipped to defeat in an entertaining Pitching In Isthmian League North clash with cup king’s AFC Sudbury at the MEL Group Stadium.

Rovers headed to Suffolk looking to record back-to-back league victories, having seen local rivals, Hullbridge Sports off by a goal to nil at Burroughs Park at the weekend.

However, that was always going to be a tall order against a Sudbury side that had booked a mouthwatering Emirates FA Cup first-round tie with near neighbours, Colchester United after impressively dispatching National South side, Dartford.

Rovers found themselves behind as early as the fourth minute thanks to a Cruis Nyadzayo strike. However, Steve Butterworth’s men fought back to level through Connor Hammond, then took the lead just after the hour when George Keys put through his own goal.

But Sudbury found a way back into the match when Jake Turner levelled the score fourteen minutes from time before a late Jake Clowsley brace broke the Rovers resistance.

Great Wakering remain next to bottom of the Isthmian North table. They return to league action on Saturday, February 23 when they travel to Stowmarket Town (3pm).
