U’s held by ten-man Stanley

Colchester United v Accrington Stanley – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Report

Colchester United 1-1 Accrington Stanley

Relegation-threatened Colchester United were left frustrated as ten-man Accrington Stanley salvaged a late share of the Sky Bet League Two spoils at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Having been thwarted by the wet weather conditions during the week, U’s boss, Danny Cowley hoped his side was fresh for the challenge offered by the East Lancashire side: “The preparation has been good,” he explained.

“We adapted accordingly, obviously, we were all disappointed that the game against Grimsby got called off on Tuesday.

“We were prepped and ready to go, like I said then, we felt sorry for ourselves, but even more sorry for our supporters.

“It’s never easy when a game gets called off that late on, but unfortunately the elements just beat us on this occasion and really off of the back of that game getting called off we had the contingency of training anyway, so we were able to train.

“Luckily enough, we had the dome that we were able to use and we had a really good session. The players’ attitude was, as you would expect, really, really good.

“We trained up to about 10pm. I think on Tuesday evening and for us it’s always to try to see the next opportunity and ultimately to be able to train on Tuesday night that was it and this allowed us to get ahead in terms of our preparation for the game on Saturday against Accrington.”

And the U’s looked set to earn their second victory under Cowley’s tenure when Noah Chilvers fired them ahead four minutes before the break.

A goal behind, Accrington’s task appeared that bit harder when

Brad Hills was shown a straight red card after appearing to lash out at Tom Hopper. However, Stanley hit back ten minutes from time when Riley Harbottle turned the ball into his own goal to restore parity.

With Sutton United and Forest Green Rovers both losing, the U’s edged seven points clear of the dropzone. They return to Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday, February 24 when they face Sutton United at the VBS Community Stadium (3pm).
