U’s position perilous after Boundary Park battering

Oldham Athletic 5-2 Colchester United

Colchester United remain embroiled in a desperate battle to preserve their Football League status after slipping to a heavy defeat at Oldham Athletic.

The U’s have won just one of their last 25 Sky Bet League Two matches and sit just five points above the relegation zone ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

U’s trailed 2-0 at the interval. Tom Eastman fouled Davis Keillor-Dunn – Conor McAleny converting the resulting spot-kick. Then Alfie McCalmont’s dead-ball effort fizzed into the net three minutes before the interval.

And the U’s problems deepened when Carl Piergianni added a third for the home side shortly before the hour mark.

Frank Nouble reduced the arrears with a left-footed strike after Ryan Clampin had fashioned an opening. And a comeback looked on when Tom Eastman fired into the bottom corner of the net to set up a grandstand finish.

But Colchester was to be undone in stoppage-time. Keillor-Dunn added a fourth from distance, and then rubbed further salt in the U’s wound with his second of the evening to confirm a resounding victory.

Colchester United return to Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday, April 17 when Walsall visit the JobServe Community Stadium (3pm).
