U’s see off nine-man Salford to secure EFL status

Colchester United 1-0 Salford City

A second-half goal from Josh Bohui proved sufficient for Colchester United to see off Sky Bet League Two play-off hopefuls, Salford City in a scrappy encounter at the JobServe Community Stadium which saw Di’Shon Bernard and Ash Hunter given their marching orders for the visitors’.

Needing a single point to be safe, Tom Eastman went close following a Noah Chilvers flag-kick, while Frank Nouble tested Salford stopper, Vaclav Hladky as Colchester created the clearer of the early openings.

The visitors’ task was made all the more difficult when Bernard bundled over Chilvers and received a second yellow card with little over half an hour on the clock.

Chilvers’ dead-ball attempt was too high, while Salford substitute, George Boyd skipped clear but dragged wide as sporadic opportunities were exchanged. But it was the home side who made the breakthrough midway through the second period – Bohui had only just arrived as a replacement for Chilvers, nevertheless, he found the composure to dispatch Ben Stevenson’s through ball with aplomb – The U’s thoroughly deserved their advantage.

Salford were reduced to nine men in stoppage-time. Hunter showed a straight red card after raising his hand to U’s boss, Hayden Mullins.
