U’s slip out of the play-off places

The region’s fourth-tier clubs endured another mixed Saturday, on February’s Leap Day.

Colchester United did everything but that and slipped out of the play-off spots after suffering a 0-2 reverse at home to rivals, Cheltenham Town – their fifth win on the spin.

Goals on 39 and 78 minutes from the Robins’ Alfie May and Chris Hussey saw the Gloucestershire side jump into fourth spot – with Port Vale picking up a point, in a 2-2 draw at Scunthorpe United – claiming the last play-off spot.

To add insult to injury, U’s Omar Souwumni was red-carded in time added-on, picking up a second yellow card.

Meanwhile, Leyton Orient endured a blank day in what was billed as a ‘grudge match’ at play-off fading Forest Green Rovers. Their clash was postponed before midday – due to a waterlogged pitch.

The East Londoners, still seventeen points above bottom club Stevenage – whose home game with Walsall was also postponed – slipped to 19th spot after being leapfrogged by Scunthorpe and Oldham Athletic – who thrashed free-falling Newport County 5-0.
