Colchester United have been handed a boost ahead of the new Sky Bet League Two season with the news that Tommy Smith, Junior Tchamadeu and Brendan Wiredu have extended their time with the North Essex outfit.
Smith has made more than 400 appearances during a career largely spent with Ipswich Town. The 31-year-old still had a year to run on his current deal but has now agreed to remain with the club at least until the summer of 2023.
“I’m delighted to get it done and be committed to the club for another two years, it was always something I was looking to do,” the Macclesfield-born defender told ColU TV.
“It was a difficult year last season, but I know what the owner and Chairman is trying to do with the club and it excites me.
“We don’t want to be there again, we’ve got ambitions of pushing towards the top seven. Today is the start of that.”
Stylish defender Tchamadeu became the youngest-ever Colchester United starting debutant when he starred in a 2-1 victory over Grimsby Town at the JobServe Community Stadium in December 2020 at the age of 16-years and 349 days.
Meanwhile, Wiredu penned a two-year deal having initially joined the U’s on loan from Charlton Athletic in September 2019 following a similar spell with Bromley.
The 21-year-old returned to Colchester in January 2020, signing a permanent deal a month later. But following a string of impressive performances the midfielder has secured his immediate future as Colchester look to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion during the coming months.
