Essex recovered from 53/5 to finish day two of their LVInsurance County Championship encounter at Durham in a strong position.

Adam Wheater and Ryan ten Doeschate put together 125 for the sixth wicket, pulling the visitors clear after Brydon Carse and Ben Raine had given Durham hope with a flurry of early wickets.

Earlier, Durham had resumed on 56/6. Sam Cook the chief tormentor, taking 4/38, while Jamie Porter and Peter Siddle each claimed three apiece as the hosts were dismissed for 99, in response to Essex’s 182 (Michael Pepper 92 – Chris Rushworth 4/32, Scott Borthwick 4/45).

Carse and Raine performed amicably with the Ball for Durham, finishing with 3/69 and 3/51 respectively. But Wheater (81) and ten Doeschate (55) helped Essex establish a commanding lead. Simon Harmer was still their at the close, unbeaten on 30. Play resumes on Saturday at 11am.
