Gillingham v Southend United – The Priestfield Stadium – Sky Bet League One – Saturday 3pm
Gillingham v Southend United – Preview:
Gary Waddock continues his role as Southend United’s caretaker-manager with speculation rife about a new appointment in the Roots Hall Stadium hotseat following the resignation of Kevin Bond a month ago.
Henrik Larsson, Adam Barrett and Sol Campbell have all been linked with the vacant post. However, with each candidate having little managerial experience, sections of the Southend support have displayed their concerns with their side already entrenched in a relegation battle with just a single Sky Bet League One victory to their name from ten outings.
Indeed, Blues have picked up all four of their league points under Waddock’s guidance and the former Queen’s Park Rangers man will be hoping his charges can build on that when they take on Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium on Saturday.
Waddock’s task isn’t helped with John White (broken arm) and Charlie Kelman (ankle) both missing through injury. However, striker Simon Cox is available after it was initially feared an ankle injury sustained during last weekend’s defeat to Accrington Stanley might keen him sidelined.
Host’s Gillingham are also struggling and have won just twice this season – most recently going down 3-0 at in-form Oxford United with all the goals coming in the opening half.
