Wakering’s over 60’s got their Essex Walking Football League season off to a flyer with four wins in as many games from the first round of matches stages at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford.
A well-contested contest with Cheshunt saw both sides play some good football before former New Zealand full-international, Peter Henry and Andrew Douglas netted to hand the villagers a 2-0 success.
Leyton Orient provided stiff opposition, getting players behind the ball and generally making it difficult for John Burkett’s men.
However, a well-taken goal from Paul Tregent ensured a second success, setting Wakering up for a clash with Little Oakley.
Again, Wakering came out on top following a hard-fought contest. Henry and Tregent the men doing the damage for another 2-0 win.
2-0 was alright by Wakering, and they repeated the dose in their final match against Paringdon Pirates.
Despite some tiredness creeping in, Henry bagged a brace to ensure the villager’s top spot in the early league table.
