Paul Walter’s maiden first-class century provided the Chelmsford crowd with a highlight as Essex strengthened their position on day two of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Yorkshire at The Cloud County Ground.

Having narrowly missed out on three figures against Northamptonshire a week previous, Walter’s 402-minutes in the middle gleaned 141 off 322 balls, a knock that included eighteen 4s and one huge 6.

Having already established a 174-run third-wicket stand with fellow centurion, Alastair Cook, Walter and nightwatchman, Sam Cook put together a further 69 for the fourth. Cook eventually departed to a terrific delivery from George Hill which removed his off-stump. Dom Bess eventually concluded Walter’s innings. Matthew Revis taking a catch at point.

Simon Harmer also put runs on the board. His 54 helped the hosts to 403. Thompson and Bess took three wickets apiece for the visitors.

In response, Yorkshire had reached 80/3 by the close. Cook followed up his exploits with the bat by taking 2/15, while Shane Snater continued his recent excellent form by putting pay to Hill on 28, thanks to the glovework of Adam Rossington. Play resumes on Friday at 11am
