Walthamstow mum left with leak and gaping hole in ceiling for three months

A single Walthamstow mother was left with a gaping hole in her ceiling for almost three months after the council struggled to organise repairs.

Mother-of-three Mehnaz Latif, 37, lived with leaking plug sockets and bucket-lined floors after her roof collapsed during heavy rains on July 14.

She said that, despite scaffolding going up in August, it took until October 8 for the roof of her Fernhill Court home to be fixed.

She said: “[My children] would wake up in the middle of the night, and the rain would make so much noise they couldn’t sleep.

“The water was actually coming out the plugs, it could have caused a fire or damage to the other residents’ homes. It was too much, I was totally fed up and angry.”

Mehnaz had to put towels and buckets in her living room and children’s bedroom to catch water dripping from the large holes and through a plug socket.

Cllr Louise Mitchell, the council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We would like to offer our sincerest apologies to the affected resident.

“We are pleased to confirm that the roof repairs have now been completed and the internal work is scheduled for next week.”
