Southend Saxons 45-21 Shelford
DIRECTOR OR RUGBY, Josh Ward was hugely satisfied with his Southend Saxons side as they saw off Shelford at Warners Bridge, earning two London One North bonus points as they cranked up their push for a promotion place.
The Saxons extended their unbeaten sequence to four matches, elevating themselves into third place in the process and Ward was quick to praise his side for their quick start.
“The boys were excellent for large parts today, we had a huge emphasis today on how we wanted to start the game and I felt despite not building the scoreboard up, the rugby we played in the opening 15 was superb,” he enthused.
“We played with real tempo and intent which resulted in some open spaces being created and pleasingly we executed fairly well. The boys off the bench were superb and energised us well. We knew today was going to be a massive eighteen-man shift.
“Wag (Matthew Wagstaff), Joel (Armitage) and Vaughany (Chris Vaughan) were excellent today, Collen (Smith) gave an incredible performance today playing a pivotal part throughout ensuring we had front-foot ball too.”
It was also a good day for the Priors team, who recorded a 38-12 victory over Shelford’s second string.
“We’re delighted we’ve won two games today but internally we’ve got to be better for eighty-minutes,” Ward added.
Our ‘D’ was incredibly poor at times in the last quarter as we leaked some very poor defensive scores.
“It’s five points on our Saxon and Priors campaigns tally which is what we set out to achieve today, so it’s a pleasing end to a nice week personally.”
Southend Saxons return to London One North action on Saturday, November 16 when Ruislip are the visitors to Warners Bridge (3pm).
